Le Cygne, is an incredibly striking, single-storey Villa, set around a panoramic infinity pool and with fabulous south-facing views over wooded hills and valleys. The Villa was designed and built in 1994 by a Chicago-based architect and the frontage is almost entirely glazed to flood the rooms with sunlight and make the most of the views. With minimalist white décor throughout, the Villa is aptly named ‘The Swan’ and this provides the perfect blank canvas for the most arresting artwork and sculptures.
Spending all or part of hot summer nights on the couches installed on the Roof Terrace is a special experience. It's the ideal place to marvel at the star-studded skies, and to witness the occasional shooting star. It's also somewhere very pleasant to enjoy a drink in the late afternoons, sitting in comfortable armchairs, and overlooking the spectacular wooded hills and valleys to the south.
Le Cygne is an ultra-modern single-storey Villa, with 3 bedrooms, sleeping 6 people.
Entrance Hallway - with a Cloakroom and WC at one side
Sitting Room – luxuriously large and light, with a front wall of floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors opening onto the Sun Terrace. The room is furnished with sofas and armchairs, and has a contemporary stone fireplace, satellite TV, a DVD player and masses of DVD’s.
Kitchen/Dining Area - with floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors that open onto a panoramic Dining Terrace with a retractable sun blind and a gas barbecue nearby. The Kitchen/Dining Area has a table seating 8, gleaming white units, a gas cooker with 4-burner gas hob, an electric oven, a fridge/freezer, double sinks, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, blender, juicer etc.
Utility Room – accessed from the Kitchen with a washing machine, a tumble dryer, an iron and an ironing board, and a laundry sink.
Bedroom 1 - the very large Master Bedroom, with floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors opening onto the Pool Terrace and a 6’ 6’’ double bed which can be divided into 2 singles. On the L-shaped desk in one corner is a printer/scanner. The ensuite Shower Room 1 has a walk-in shower, a wash basin and a W.C.
Bedroom 2 – has a 6-ft double bed and a large cupboard where the family’s games are stored. The ensuite Bathroom 1 has a bath fitted with a shower, a washbasin and a W.C.
Bedroom 3 – has two, 3’ 6’’ single beds and ensuite Bathroom 3, with a bath fitted with a shower, a washbasin and a W.C.
A separate Studio is kept locked, where art exhibitions are held from time to time, but not during tenancies, of course.
The caretakers, Julie and Julien, live in a Cottage (with its own entrance) at one end of the Villa.
Garden & Grounds
Le Cygne has an immensely discreet and understated setting, approached via electronically-operated entrance gates to a shaded parking area. The Villa stands in 2 hectares (5 acres) of grounds and has magnificent views over the totally unspoilt wooded valleys and hills of the Var.
The Villa has been designed so the whole frontage opens onto a stunning Terrace with sun loungers, sun umbrellas and a dining area, then a few steps lead down to an infinity Swimming Pool.
The Swimming Pool is 8.60 metres long and 2.10 metres wide, with Roman steps into the shallow end which is 1.50 metres deep, sloping to 2.60 metres at the deep end. The Pool is filtered and alarmed.
Le Cygne is situated off a very quiet country road, and 500 metres from the scenic nature reserve called the Site de St Barthélémy. This reserve is a ‘must-visit’, with its shady trees, pond, streams and mini-waterfalls, offering many attractive walks and places for a picnic.
The village of Villecroze (5 kms) has a lovely square, a variety of cafés and restaurants, and a bakery, post office and grocery. The larger villages of Salernes and Aups (2 kms and 7 kms respectively) both have good shopping including supermarkets, and restaurants in various price ranges.
40 minutes' drive to the north is the 10 km-long Lac de Ste Croix with excellent swimming from its many beaches in crystal-clear water, as well as wind-surfing, sailing and pedalos.
To the east of Lac de Ste Croix are the dramatic Gorges du Verdon, known as the Grand Canyon of Europe and providing all kinds of exhilarating pursuits including hiking, canoeing, kayaking, canyoning and mountain biking. Electric motor boats can also be hired.
Toulon (Hyères) international airport is about 1¼ hours' drive, whilst the larger international airports of Marseilles (Marignane) and Nice are approximately 1½ hours' away. The super-fast train, the TGV, stops at Aix TGV station (between Aix-en-Provence and Marseilles), although some trains continue, rather more slowly, to Draguignan/Les Arcs, about 30 kms from the house.
Unless otherwise agreed, there should not be more than 6 people (including children) staying in the Villa at any one time.
Le Cygne is not suitable for children under 10 years of age.
Tenants will be met on arrival by the caretakers, Julien Deneulin and Julie de Oliviera, and will be shown round the property. The cleaner, Rachel Deroin, is employed by the owners on 3 days per week for 2 hours per day. She should be paid by tenants @ 15 Euros per hour for any agreed extra days/hours of work.
Maintenance of the swimming pool and grounds is the owner's responsibility.
As long as sufficient notice is given, a baby-sitter and/or a part-time cook can probably be arranged. His/her/their wage/s will be the tenants' responsibility and, if requested, will be ascertained prior to the commencement of the tenancy.
Bed linen, bath and pool towels are provided free of charge, and will be changed on a weekly basis.
The Villa has Broadband/Wi Fi internet access.
There is a house telephone.
The owner’s insurance policy requires that all outside doors (sliding and otherwise) are locked, and that the alarm is set whenever all tenants leave the property for whatever reason. They will be shown how to set and unset this alarm, and also how to operate the electronically-controlled entrance gates.
This is an all-year-round property, with an underfloor heating/cooling system.
The Villa’s Information Folder explains how everything works (both inside and outside). It lists the names and telephone numbers of a doctor, dentist, electrician, plumber, pool man, etc, plus other emergency and useful numbers.
